You may be eligible for the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit if you made the following qualifying improvements to your home during the year:
- Solar electric property
- Solar water heaters
- Fuel cell property
- Small wind energy property
- Geothermal heat pumps
Go to this section in Credit Karma Tax: Residential Energy Credits
The home must be in the United States to take this credit but it doesn’t have to be your main home. The credit is equal to 30% of your total cost, including labor, assembly and installation costs from qualifying energy efficient property.
The credit is nonrefundable, meaning it can reduce your tax liability but not more than the total amount of taxes you owe for the year. It may be carried forward to a future year.
