If your state charges personal property taxes as part of your vehicle registration fee, you can deduct only the portion that is based on the value of your vehicle. The fee must be assessed on an annual basis.

You can check with your state’s DMV or review your billing statement to get a breakdown of the fees and what each was for. Many states will charge fees based on the weight and the value, among other things but you can only deduct the portion of the fee associated with value.
