You might qualify for a hardship exemption if you experience a life situation such as a bankruptcy or the death of a family member which prevented you from getting health insurance.
Hardship exemptions usually apply to the month before the hardship until the month after the hardship.
You can claim most health coverage exemptions when you file your taxes. The IRS provides resources on Exemptions: Claiming or Reporting to help you determine what you need to claim an exemption.
For certain hardship exemptions you will need a Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) that you receive after being approved by the Health Insurance Marketplace. Forms and application information are available on healthcare.gov
