Your Form 1099-R may not show a taxable amount in box 2a for a few reasons.
Go to this section in Credit Karma Tax: Form 1099-R
You may not see a taxable amount in box 2a because:
- Payments were from a non-taxable source such as a Roth IRA.
- Payments made to you were subject to withholding of Social Security and Medicare taxes, they should be reported on a W-2 instead of on Form 1099-R.
- Workers compensation and Department of Veterans Affairs payments are generally tax exempt and shouldn’t be reported on the 1099-R unless part of the payment is taxable.
- The payer might not have been required to calculate taxable income for you or didn’t have enough information to do so.
If Box 2a is blank (empty) on your 1099-R form, the taxable portion of your distribution needs to be calculated. Make sure to enter the information from your 1099-R into Credit Karma Tax as it appears on the form. We’ll help you calculate the taxable portion of your 1099-R income based on the information you provide.
