A blocked inquiry alert is a security alert informing you that a company attempted to access your credit file while it was locked.
This means that you or someone else applied for a new credit card or loan using your name, but the company was unable to access your credit report due to the locked status.
We’ll send you a blocked inquiry alert regardless of whether you’ve locked your report directly through Credit Karma or through TransUnion. Our blocked inquiry alerts are only for TransUnion at this time.

I applied for a new credit card or loan and received a blocked inquiry alert. What do I do now?
If you had applied for a new credit card or loan while your credit report was locked, your application may not go through. In that case, it is not a hard inquiry and should not have a negative impact on your credit scores.
You can unlock your credit report directly with the bureau or on Credit Karma if you are part of Credit Lock beta. Once you’ve unlocked your credit report, you can re-apply for the new card or loan.
I didn’t apply for a new credit card or loan and received a blocked inquiry alert. What do I do now?
If you were not the one who applied for a new credit card or loan, this may be an unauthorized inquiry. Though our blocked inquiry alert means that your credit file is still locked with TransUnion, there are steps you can take to help protect yourself:
- Contact the company that made the inquiry.
- Report and document fraud.
- Notify the credit bureaus.
- Place a fraud alert.
- Dispute the unauthorized inquiry with each of the credit bureaus.
Learn more about what you can do if you spot an unauthorized hard inquiry.
