Once you have completed your tax return, it’s important that you save the return itself and any documents you used to prepare it (W-2, 1099s, interest statements, etc.). Store everything in a safe place that you will remember.

Some common reasons why you may need to access your tax return after you’ve filed:
- To see your AGI Amount
- Proof of Income
- Filing an Amended return
- Loan Applications
- FASFA/Financial Aid
- Filing for Bankruptcy
- Filing for Divorce
The IRS generally recommends you keep tax returns and associated records for three years after you file the return. However, in some situations, such as amending a return after you’ve filed it, you may want to keep returns and records longer.
If you lose your tax return and can’t gain access to your Credit Karma Tax account you can request your tax return transcript from the IRS either by mail or online.
